The APSF Low-Flow Anesthesia (LFA) course is an interactive, simulation-based program designed to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and sustainable practice. Inhaled anesthetics are potent greenhouse gases; reducing fresh gas flow (FGF) is one of the most effective ways for clinicians to immediately decrease their environmental footprint.
This course utilizes a guided web-based simulation to help anesthesia professionals visualize gas kinetics within the circle system. It empowers practitioners to safely and confidently reduce flows during all phases of anesthesia—induction, maintenance, and emergence—while maintaining vigilant patient safety and monitoring standards.
Format: 8 self-paced modules (approx. 15 minutes each).
Cost: Free for all anesthesia professionals.
Credits: Eligible for 3.0 CME/CE credits (includes MOCA® 2.0 Patient Safety credit).

Real-Time Carbon Footprint Tracking
Yale Gassing Greener is a free mobile application designed to help anesthesia providers transition to environmentally conscious practice. It translates complex clinical data—such as agent type and flow rates—into easy-to-understand carbon dioxide equivalents ($CO_2e$), allowing you to see the immediate environmental impact of your anesthetic choices.
Key Features
Clinician Calculator: Input specific anesthetic agents (Desflurane, Isoflurane, Sevoflurane, and $N_2O$) and flow rates to obtain a report on the carbon emission equivalents for an individual case.
Facility Calculator: Designed for perioperative leadership to enter total volumes of purchased inhaled anesthetics. The app generates a comprehensive emailed report of the entire facility’s carbon footprint, which is vital for benchmarking and sustainability certification.
Educational Modules: Includes built-in resources to help practitioners understand Global Warming Potential (GWP) and learn strategies for safe, low-flow delivery.
Download & Access
Download for iOS (Apple App Store) – Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision.
Download for Android (Google Play) – Direct link to the official Yale University listing.
Web-Based CO2 Survey – Access the underlying calculator and facility survey directly through the Yale School of Public Health website.

Visualizing Environmental & Financial Costs
The Anaesthetic Impact Calculator is a highly accessible tool developed in conjunction with University Hospital Southampton. It allows anesthesia providers to easily set fresh gas flow (FGF) and active agent percentages for Isoflurane, Sevoflurane, and Desflurane to see an immediate estimation of the global warming effect and the financial cost of their chosen anesthetic technique.
Key Features
Instant Comparison: Utilize simple sliders to adjust flow rates and agent percentages, seeing how small clinical changes drastically shift the $CO_2e$ output.
Car Distance Equivalent: To make the data more relatable, the app translates greenhouse gas emissions into "car miles traveled," providing a powerful narrative tool for clinical education.
Customizable Settings: A dedicated settings screen allows users to input their specific local pricing for anesthetic agent bottles, ensuring the financial data is accurate for their own facility.
Research-Validated: The underlying mathematics of the app have been rigorously validated and published in Anaesthesia to ensure high accuracy for clinical decision-making.

Translating Procurement into Climate Impact
Developed by Practice Greenhealth, the Anesthetic Gas Data Collection and Tracking Tool is the definitive resource for hospital administrators and anesthesia clinical champions to establish a carbon baseline. Unlike point-of-care calculators, this tool is designed for top-down analysis, converting annual purchasing data into Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent ($MTCO_2e$).
Key Features
Interactive Spreadsheet: A comprehensive, automated Excel-based tool that calculates the environmental footprint of purchased gases—including Sevoflurane, Isoflurane, Desflurane, and Nitrous Oxide.
Baseline Benchmarking: Allows facilities to track percent changes in emissions over time, providing the "hard data" required to justify sustainability programs to senior hospital leadership.
Visual Dashboards: Automatically generates charts and breakdowns that highlight which agents are contributing most to the facility's Scope 1 emissions.
Normalization Data: Includes fields for total surgical hours and case numbers, allowing you to normalize your data and compare your facility’s efficiency against national benchmarks.

Measuring the Environmental Impact of the Patient Journey
The Care Pathway Carbon Calculator, developed by the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition (SHC), is a rapid-assessment tool designed to estimate the carbon footprint of an entire healthcare service. While typical calculators focus only on anesthetic gases, this tool provides a "systems-thinking" view, aggregating the impact of consultations, travel, surgical procedures, and hospital bed days into a single metric ($kgCO_2e$).
Key Features
Holistic Mapping: Uses a step-wise process to sum carbon from separate "activity modules" associated with a patient’s care, from initial GP consultation to discharge and follow-up.
Surgical Detail: For pathways involving surgery, users can enter detailed data on medical gases, consumables, equipment, utilities, and waste.
Materiality Assessment: Helps clinicians identify "carbon hotspots"—specific areas of the pathway where changes will yield the greatest environmental benefit.
Privacy-Centric: The tool operates via a "local save" on your computer; no data is transmitted to external servers, ensuring patient and facility data remains secure.
