• "By optimizing anesthesia—such as transitioning from inpatient surgery to day-case procedures through regional techniques—we don't just reduce gas waste; we eliminate the massive carbon footprint associated with high-intensity hospital bed days."

  • "We can’t simply use [the land] up and then move on... we have to learn to live on it, and to pass it on to our children in as good condition as we found it. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."

AWISH (Addressing World Inequity via Sustainable Healthcare): A volunteer-driven program she established to focus on reducing medical waste, improving global access to essential care, and strengthening healthcare sustainability worldwide.

Her work bridges the gap between high-quality clinical care and long-term environmental stewardship, advocating for a healthcare system that protects both patients and the planet.

  • Veronica Zoghbi MD

Assistant Professor of Clinical AnesthesiologyDirector of Pediatric Regional Anesthesia

Dr. Veronica Zoghbi is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and the Director of Pediatric Regional Anesthesia at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital. She is board-certified in both Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology.

She currently serves as a Director-at-Large for the [Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors (AACD), where she helps bridge the gap between clinical leadership and sustainable healthcare practices.

  • Shreya Aggarwal , FASA

Dr. Shreya Aggarwal is a board-certified anesthesiologist and a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA) with a dedicated focus on environmental stewardship in the operating room. She has been a key contributor to national sustainability initiatives, serving as an author for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) guide, "Greening the Operating Room and Perioperative Arena."

Dr. Aggarwal's work emphasizes practical clinical solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare, including:

Mitigating Greenhouse Gases: Advocating for the decommissioning of nitrous oxide and the elimination of high-impact inhaled anesthetics like desflurane.

Waste Reduction: Implementing low-flow anesthesia techniques and pioneering OR recycling programs, for which she was awarded a dedicated grant during her residency.

Resilient Practice: Integrating regional anesthesia and mindful pharmaceutical management to navigate supply chain issues while promoting environmental sustainability.

She is a frequent speaker and panelist on sustainable anesthesia, helping to educate the global medical community on linking clinical quality with environmental health.

  • Mary Jarzabowski MD

Anesthesiologist | Critical Care Medicine Specialist | Sustainability Leader

Dr. Mary Jarzebowski is a board-certified anesthesiologist and critical care medicine specialist. She currently practices at the LTC Charles S. Kettles VAMC and Henry Ford Health, where she is a key member of the Green OR.

Dr. Jarzebowski is a leading advocate for reducing the environmental impact of perioperative care. Her recent work focuses on:

Infrastructure Transformation: Leading the initiative to decommission environmentally harmful nitrous oxide pipelines and transitioning to a more sustainable model of anesthesia delivery using portable tanks to eliminate greenhouse gas leaks.

Emissions Mitigation: Advancing strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of the operating room by tailoring fresh gas flows and prioritizing anesthetics with lower global warming potential.

Clinical Innovation: Researching and implementing evidence-based strategies that link patient safety and clinical excellence with environmental stewardship.

  • VIDYA T. RAMAN, MD, MBA, FASA, FAAP
